Dachshund!
A symbol of Germany, the Dachshund has become popular worldwide and earned the nicknames "sausage dog" and "weiner". The breed originated as a long-bodied, short-legged dog used to hunt ground-dwelling animals such as badgers; the name Dachshund means "badger dog" in German. The dogs could trail their quarry by scent, as other hounds do but could also go to ground like terriers, to flush out or kill their prey. As well as badger, the dogs hunted rabbit, fox and stoat, and could even take on wolverines. Some Dachshunds are still used in Germany for hunting, but most are family pets. Despite their small size, Dachshunds need plenty of physical and mental activity. They are clever, bold, and affectionate, but can be strong-willed and tend to ignore commands when following a scent. Dachshunds are protective towards their human family and make good guard dogs, but can be snappy with strangers.
